Elijah's 3rd Birthday

We enjoyed a small, mellow birthday party for Eli at Pebble Pocket Park. It was short and sweet with presents, cake and a few family members. It was exactly what I needed while being this pregnant and recovering from being so sick. He had a Mickey Mouse themed birthday party. At first, he was a little leary of the giant Mickey head balloon, but he did warm up to it.

For the first time, he cared about opening presents. We opened a present and a few cards on the morning of his birthday, and he asked for "more presents, please." That was a first. He was so funny though, he did not believe that he had turned three, which was one of the reasons I wanted him to open a present. When he woke up, I wished him a happy birthday, and asked him how old he was. He said 2. First, he insisted he wouldn't be 3 until the 27th, then he relented a little and said he wouldn't be 3 until after his party. In fact, when we were packing up after the party, he was saying his goodbyes and thank yous from his car seat. He sat back and beamed, looking content, and finally said he was 3.

Seana was so helpful and made the cake. I had plans to make it, but after getting so sick, I eagerly accepted her offer. It was delicious, made from scratch, and she did a great job on her first decorated cake. While driving away from the party, Eli said out of nowhere, "Mmmm, yummy cake!" That boy loves his chocolate.

Speaking of chocolate, Eli loves M&M's. He has no interest in non-chocolate dessert, and M&M's are his favorite candy. Dendi ordered Eli personalized M&M's for his birthday. As you can see from the picture, he loved them and ate his fill.

Here's some pictures of the M&M's. Being so small, they're very hard to photograph, I did my best. As you can see, yellow is his favorite color. Click on the picture to see a full sized view.

A favorite gift of the day was the garbage truck from Uncle Jason and Miss Andrea. In fact, it may be his favorite toy ever. He goes through phases, but in general, he's not that into toys. Books and puzzles hold his attention much longer. But, this garbage truck was a serious hit. He's already played with it for hours, even though we've only had it for a few days.

The cutest photographed smile Dendi or I got out of him all day was watching Daddy and Uncle Jason play with his new "power tools" from Dendi. As you can see from the first picture in this entry, he tends to make "squishy face" when asked to smile for a picture. Funny thing is, Uncle Brian made a similar "pretty face" when he was little. The power tools came in a Bob the Builder backpack, with "regular tools". Uncle Jason and Daddy were intrigued to realize that when you touched the saw or drill to a surface they made a realistic sound. Here's Eli watching the big boys play.

After the party, Dendi and BaPa invited us all over for a barbecue. Eli happily played with his new garbage truck with Ms. Andrea for most of the evening.

The Update and 37 weeks Yoga Belly Shots

I'm eleven days away from my due date and hoping that baby girl stays put as long as possible. My lungs couldn't handle labor at this point. Scott, Eli and I have been battling a chest cold now for over a week. Eli seems to have kicked his, and on Monday afternoon both Scott and I were told that we had bronchitis. My doctor said that I had a sinus infection as well. Then, on Wednesday when I went to see Heather I asked her to check my lungs. According to my allergist, I should have started to feel better. I didn't. I felt worse and couldn't breathe. She said that I sounded "horrible" and thought it had gone into pneumonia. Of course, there's no way to verify, since the last thing we want to do is a chest xray. But, now I'm being treated for pneumonia. I have to say I do feel a lot worse than I ever did with just bronchitis. I thank God for the nebulizer, Diane, Scott, Seana and the cough syrup that has finally allowed me to sleep.

I think Scott and I both got as sick as we are because of last weekend's excitement. We spent two nights in the hospital with contractions and I got very little sleep. I had contractions all day Saturday, all night Saturday and most of Sunday. We went to the hospital twice because the contractions were less than 5 minutes apart, but my cervix wasn't cooperating. Between Saturday and Sunday I progressed from 1/2 cm to 1 cm. So, on Sunday they were a little more hopeful, but with no further progress while we were at the hospital, they sent my home with a sedative. Thank God for the sedative. I finally got some sleep, and the contractions stopped. Diane and Tom were wonderful with Eli all weekend. He spent his first two nights away from us, and survived with flying colors. He came home for a few hours on Saturday, but Scott and I were acting so strangely that I think he was relieved to return to some normalcy at Dendi and Bapa's. When I woke up from my sedative stupor on Monday I realized I couldn't breathe, so Seana drove me to the allergist.

Apart from diagnosing me with pneumonia, Heather verified that I'm still at 1 cm, 50 % effaced. I wasn't surprised as the contractions had really petered out. Now, that I'm as sick as I am I'm just happy that she's staying put for now. The contractions have started building again, but nothing regular or too intense. I'm going to wait this time until I'm crying or screaming from the contractions to go in. One reason that I'm having such a hard time identifying labor is that I was induced last time, after my water broke. So, I don't know what the onset of "real labor" feels like.

In completely separate news, a week ago Tuesday, Seana came over and took a bunch of belly shots of me. I was exactly 37 weeks. That morning while getting my hair done, I told the beautician that my hair appointment was great timing since my sister and I were taking belly shots later in the day. She gave me the funniest look, and just stared at me. Finally, when I continued talking, describing how we were going to take some pictures of me doing Yoga. She chuckled and said, "Ooohhh, I thought you meant you were going to be drinking, like belly shots were some sort of body shot!" Later, Seana and I had a good laugh over that.

When we reviewed the pictures later, I just couldn't believe how HUGE my belly is! Last night, I caught a glimpse of my reflection and didn't even recognize myself! First, we took some basic belly shots.

Then, we did some Yoga belly shots.

Finally, the way Eli sees me (CRAZY!) and a focused belly shot...

Once we were finished taking our pictures, and Eli woke up from his nap, we looked through some of the pictures with him. Seana asked him if he remembered me without my belly. He looked at her like she was crazy.

Eli-isms Part 1

I've been jotting down random cute things that Eli has said or done for a few months now. I keep meaning to post them and there's no time like the present. As I have been collecting these sayings for months, I'm sure this is the first post of many posts. Here goes, in no particular order...

-- One pair of Eli's fuzzy winter pajamas has a hole in one of the feet. I keep meaning to sew it up, but you know how that goes. One morning while changing his diaper, Eli started talking about his big toe that was sticking out of the hole. He told me it was the "Mother" or "Mamma" toe. I guess he extrapolated that, if the little toe was called the baby toe, the big toe must be the mom.

-- One of Eli's favorite munchies are Goldfish. We usually have them packed in a tupperware in the backpack. When we are at home, I open up the tupperware and place it on the ottoman where he can graze when hungry. Daddy likes Goldfish too, so one afternoon he was helping himself to some of Eli's snacks. Eli told Daddy not to eat all of them. Scott said that he had just bought a BIG container of Goldfish. He made a big deal about it, taking the new container out of the pantry, showing it to Eli and telling Eli that there were "TWO POUNDS of Goldfish," so there was plenty to share.

About a week later, Scott was taking Eli out of the house on an outing. They were trying to decide what kind of outerwear Eli needed. Eli opened the front door to check the temperature. Scottie asked him if it was cold. Eli turned and emphatically said that it was "TWO POUNDS COLD!" I guess it was very cold.

-- Until just recently, the only breakfast (and really lunch) that Eli wanted was pancakes and waffles. He liked to alternate, one pancake, one waffle, etc. At the beginning of breakfast he would ask me what he had last, so that he could keep up his rotation. Then, one morning when he was really hungry, he ate his pancake, and his waffle and asked for more. Surprised, I told him that he already had "a pancake and a waffle." Sooo, he told me that he now wanted "b" pancake and "b" waffle.

-- We seem to be raising a future lawyer, politician, or mediator. He is a VERY effective and hilarious negotiator. He's so good that Scott and I frequently have to lowball at the beginning of the negotiations just to break even. We list his choices, and he usually likes to tell me how I could have better presented these choices. He even, unsurprisingly, suggests alternative choices. At one point he started saying, "Ummmm...Idea," whenever he wanted to make a suggestion. He would say this while holding up his right index finger, as if to accentuate his point. He still does it, but far less frequently, and sounds just like a little man when it occurs.

-- We were shopping for place mats, and thought we'd show Eli some of the educational ones at the local toy store, as he loves letters and numbers. We let him pick out his own from the available collection. He chose letters, numbers to 100, and addition & subtraction. I thought that the addition & subtraction was a little over his head, but Scott figured it couldn't hurt. A few days later I was fixing Eli's breakfast and, while I was working, I set the addition & subtraction place mat in front of him. Eli began looking at the place mat while talking to himself. At one point, during this one-way conversation, he said to himself, "What's A plus 1? Well...what comes after A? B. So, A plus 1 equals B." I hadn't yet talked to him about addition or subtraction, but maybe Scott had. In any case, I hope this all means that he has inherited his Daddy's math genes.

-- Eli self-weaned in late January. My milk supply dried up due to my pregnancy. So, to compensate, his sleepy time routines have gotten a little more complicated. Now, before nap or ni-night, he has "quiet time" in his room. Eli has fought sleep since he was a tiny baby, so quiet time is a way for him to wind down. A nice byproduct is that Scott and I get a little adult time. Quiet time means that he can do whatever he'd like in his room by himself. It's built some good independence, and I think it will be a boon for me once baby girl arrives. After quiet time, we generally read a little in bed, although he often opts out of this at nap time. Then, I climb into bed with him and we cuddle while I quietly sing songs. He gets three songs at naptime and five at bedtime. Since the establishment of this new routine, he has taken to singing to himself while "reading" his books during quiet time. He sits with his books, runs his finger under the words and sings his sleepy time songs. This "reading" also comes in handy in the back of the car during outings.

-- Another thing that he likes to do with his beloved books is count the page numbers. While I'm folding laundry or doing dishes he often sits next to me and we count page numbers. I'm not sure why this is fun for him, but he loves it. And, it's something that I can do while only giving half of my attention to the task. He frequently borrows mommy and daddy's books because they have a lot more page numbers. He's even taken to counting page numbers in his room during quiet time. At times he will yell out from his room, "What comes after 29?"

So, the other day we were heading to Chick-Fil-A. He asked the classic question of, "Are we there yet?" Scott said that we would be there once he counted to one hundred...nine times. Surprisingly, Eli started counting. He actually got to one hundred all by himself without making one slip, which completely floored the both of us. It seems, though, that it might have been a one time thing. He still asks the "what comes next" questions. Then again, maybe he just wants a little more attention.

-- Here are two things that I overheard Scott saying to Eli that made me laugh out loud: "Oooh, don't paint the kitty," and, a few days later, "Yeah, you don't fix kitty cats with screwdrivers." Apparently the paint brush was dry, and the screwdriver was of the plastic toy variety, but both comments were still hysterical.

-- Here's another Scott and Eli tidbit. It all harkens back, and is a reference, to the movie "Galaxy Quest." In the movie, which is a satire of Star Trek, Sigourney Weaver's only job is to repeat what the computer says to the crew and to repeat what the crew says to the computer. It's a jab at how sexist Star Trek was and how meaningless the female roles were on the original show. Anyway, when Scott and I are talking to each other, Eli often repeats what Scott or I say. Furthermore, Eli says it with such authority, as if he is the one who said it to begin with. Scott is so amused by this that he has started saying, "Okay, Sigourney," to Eli whenever he repeats what we say. We know it is a developmental stage for Eli to repeat things back to us, but we also thinks he does it because when he was learning to talk, we purposely repeated back to him what he said. We used it as a way to clarify and correct his grammar and language in an informal and holistic way. So now, since we've spent all his speaking life repeating what he's said, I guess Eli figures it's his turn.

More later, time for our nap...

Easter Part 3: Easter Morning, Sticker Fun, and Easter Dinner

The Easter Bunny didn't know what to do. Should he hide some eggs with chocolate for Easter morning? But, what about Eli's stomach ache? He decided to hide some eggs, mostly empty, and he hid a few eggs with one M&M inside. We told the Easter Bunny we'd explain to Eli when he woke up that the Easter Bunny wanted to hide all the eggs with chocolate, but he knew Eli had a tummy ache...

When Eli woke up early on Easter morning, he walked out into the living room, saw the Easter basket and the eggs around the room, started crying and asked to go back to bed. Wow, you know Eli is sick when even the prospect of chocolate makes him cry. After cuddling and resting in bed for about an hour he decided to brave the Easter Egg Hunt.

He seemed better after the hunt and some breakfast, but unfortunately, it was too late to go to church. Instead, after making sure he no longer had a fever, Scott and Eli walked to the Lake Park while I slept. It had been a rough two nights in a row, and a nine month pregnant woman needs some sleep. After my nap, I walked about half way to the park and met them on the trail. We headed home, took a nap, and opened Easter cards. Two of his cards featured stickers inside. Eli happily decorated himself, me and Daddy with stickers.

Then, we headed over to Dendi's house for Easter dinner with the whole gang. The only pictures we ended up taking the whole night were of the Williams/Camping/Moore family. And, of course with that many people in the picture it's impossible to get everyone smiling and looking at the camera at the same time. Here's the best shot we got with our camera.

Eli did surprisingly well at dinner, but we did have to make a semi-early exit when he'd had enough. Fortunately, we all had enough time to eat a delicious dinner, yummy dessert and do some socializing. Eli's generally on the mend, but not quite himself yet, even now a few days later. Hopefully tomorrow, he'll be back to 100%.

Easter Part 2: Easter Egg Hunt at Dendi and Bapa's subdivision

On Saturday evening, we went to a very well run community Easter Egg Hunt at Dendi and Bapa's subdivision. Community Easter Egg Hunts make me leery. They seem to be poorly organized, not enough eggs, too many kids and too much chaos. Fortunately, this one was the polar opposite. They had the hunt separated into different age groups, and the three and under group was corralled inside the tennis court. There were far more eggs than the kids could ever want and everyone seemed happy, relaxed and not rushed. Most importantly to Eli, the eggs were filled with plenty of chocolate.

We went back to Dendi and Bapa's house for a pizza dinner and some time to unwind. Dendi had been gone for over a week, visiting California. Eli enjoyed getting to spend some time with her. By the end of the night he seemed tired and uncharacteristically cranky. He came over to cuddle and I noticed that he was burning up. Then, I remembered that he hadn't slept well on Friday night and when I went in to settle him back down he complained of a tummy ache and he felt hot then, too. When we got home I took his temp -- it was 101.5! I felt bad, he'd probably been sick all day long. But he had seemed fine, so I hadn't even noticed.

Easter Part I: Easter Egg Hunt at Grammie and Babo's

I know I've been bad about keeping this blog up to date... Here's a pregnancy update... I've been having lots of contractions, in fact last night we started timing them. They were coming fairly regularly, but they weren't increasing in intensity, so I knew it wasn't the real thing. On Monday, I went to see Heather. She said that I'm progressing, I'm about 1/2 cm dilated, 50% effaced, and it took me another two weeks to get this far with Eli. She said that my cervix has moved into place, which means that these contractions are productive ones. She said that she could see me in six hours or in three weeks, there's no way to know.

We had a fun-filled weekend full of Easter festivities. We started by having Eli hunt for Easter eggs at Grammie and Babo's house on Saturday morning.

After the Easter Egg Hunt, Daddy, Eli and Babo worked on a new puzzle and Grammie got to spend some quality reading time with her boy.

More Baby Girl Love and A Brief Hospital Stint

On Friday morning, Eli and I went to play group. I am so impressed by his progress in such a short time. When we first started going to play group he would want to be held going in, and he would stick very close to me at all times. He was obviously a little overwhelmed. This Friday, he walked right into the house and started playing, he didn't care where I went. The cutest part of the play group was more baby girl love. Eli showed lots of love for baby Lauren. Here are some pics, and I'm hoping again, that this bodes well for our baby girl.

Friday night was interesting. I had contractions for over twelve hours, they weren't big contractions, but they wouldn't quit. Here's a 36 week belly shot that Scott took right before we headed out, only a few minutes before the contractions started.

In the morning, Scott told me to call the midwife, since they had gone on so long. The doctor on call wasn't concerned about the contractions, but then she started to ask a bunch of seemingly unrelated questions about my general well-being. She didn't like any of my answers. I had a bad headache with the contractions, I'd been really nauseous all week, my stomach was generally on the fritz, I had a dizzy spell after Yoga, and I had had a high (for me) blood pressure reading a few weeks prior. She told me I should go in to the hospital. We ended up spending about three hours at the hospital. Everything was fine, and it turned out that she wanted to test me for Toxemia, so I guess it was good to make sure everything was fine. Hopefully, we won't have any more hospital visits before she's born.

Shopping Cart

Our newest find from the thrift store -- a Little Tykes shopping cart. The last time Scott, Eli and I went to Imagine It, Eli discovered their store and shopping carts. He LOVED the shopping carts. As he's always loved pushing things, especially his mower, it wasn't too surprising. When we got home, Scott started researching toy shopping carts. He figured since Eli loves to mow to Kroger, if we bought him a shopping cart, he could be useful, too. The Melissa and Doug shopping carts from Imagine It were about $50. So, on a whim, Scott called my mom to ask if they had any shopping carts at the thrift store. They did have one, and I've never seen one there before. It must have been meant to be. And, of course, the thrift store price was less than a tenth of a new cart. Whoo hoo! We tried it out as soon as we could, that afternoon after our nap.

Here's Eli starting out on our journey --

And, finally pushing his full cart to the check out.

I was impressed by just how much Eli's cart could hold, and we got lots of appreciative glances, comments and smiles. We've already taken the cart back to Kroger once, and I'm sure that's only the beginnning of many, many trips. The joys of living close to the grocery store...

Daddy's Volleyball Game

Scott played in a charity volleyball game on Tuesday night. His school staff, Braelinn Elementary, played another local elementary school staff and the proceeds went to Relay for Life which benefits Breast Cancer Research. His team has been practicing every day after school for over a month. I think it's been great exercise for him as well as a good way to burn off some steam after school. In some ways I think he was a little sad to play in the culminating game, but I think they will continue to play at least through this month.

On Tuesday night, Dendi and BaPa picked Eli and I up and we all went to the game together. Eli was really excited to see Daddy play. We bought him a black pom-pom (his second favorite color, his first is yellow), and he yelled, "Braelinn, Braelinn, Braelinn!" and clapped along with the crowd. But, very quickly it became obvious that is was WAY TOO LOUD in the auditorium and he wouldn't last long. In fact, it was so loud that Scott said the team couldn't hear each other to call plays. Next time they plan on using hand signals. Not being a fan of loud noises, Eli wanted to leave, so Dendi and I took turns taking him to walk around outside. Even though I didn't get to see Scott play a whole lot, what I did see I enjoyed. Here are some pictures from the night.

Eli sitting on Dendi's lap.

Eli and I were practically celebrities, as we're related to the famous Mr. Moore (he is the only full time male teacher at his school). I was greeted by random children and we had our family picture taken multiple times by people I had never met.

Here's Scott in action

Finally, possibly Eli's favorite part of the night -- throwing his pom pom around after the gym had cleared out.

Baby Girl Love

Eli continues to LOVE girls. He is especially partial to baby girls. Which hopefully bodes well for our little package. I took these pictures at the Chick-Fil-A play place last week. He was happily playing with the other kids when this little baby girl walked in. Then, all he wanted to do was "love" her. Fortunately, he's outgrown his "leaning" -- sorry Ella! Now, he just wants to gently hug his objects of affection. This little one was hilarious, at times she seemed annoyed by him, but then when we told him to leave her alone for awhile she complained until he came back.
